Brendan Maher of Tipperary lifts the Liam MacCarthy Cup after defeating Kilkenny in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Final in September 2016

In a statement released by Tipperary County Board today former All-Ireland winning captain, Brendan Maher, announced that he was stepping down for intercounty hurling with Tipperary.

Since making his debut for Tipperary back in 2009, Maher went on to win 3 All-Star awards, 5 Munster titles and 3 All-Irelands with his county. His exploits on the field of play were duly recognised in 2010 when he was named ‘Young Player of the Year’. The highlight of his career came, however, when he captained Tipperary to All-Ireland success in 2016.

In the released statement Maher thanked the players, management, the County Board, supporters, his club Borris-Ileigh, fiancée, family and friends.
