Independent.ie Sigerson Cup Round 1: UUJ 2-14 Garda College 0-11

Donegal's Patrick McBrearty kicked 1-6 as 2016 Sigerson Cup hosts University of Ulster Jordanstown cruised into the quarter-finals with a comfortable win over Garda College.

Despite losing rising Tyrone star Rory Brennan to a straight red card for striking after 24 minutes, UUJ were already well in control thanks to a brilliant start by McBrearty.

The 2012 All-Ireland winner scored 1-4 in the opening 10 minutes, the highlight being his sixth minute finish to the far corner of the net. Jordanstown started with the breeze and led by 1-7 to 0-5 at half time.

Seven minutes after the restart, Tyrone goalkeeper Sean Fox saved a penalty from Garda's Daithi Shannon and Mayo's Evan Regan flicked home a 57th minute for the home side.

Roscommon's Colin Compton kicked three points from play for Garda, who had defeated Cork IT last week, before Carlow's Brendan Murphy was sent-off late on for two bookable offences.

Independent.ie Sigerson Cup Round 1: UL 2-15 IT Tralee 2-8

UL’s ability to pick off scores at crucial stages in the game served them well as they set up a tie in the next round of the Sigerson Cup at home to Queen’s University.

IT Tralee, who had beaten UL in the league earlier in the season, never gave up but were unable to contain the home side on the 4G at the Limerick campus. A couple of heavy downpours made conditions difficult but both sides served up a decent contest.

The sides were level at 0-9 to 1-6 at the interval after Tralee midfielder Conor Lowney fired home a goal after a quickly taken free after 17 minutes.

UL wing-back Fergal Boland went forward to kick three excellent points but his afternoon’s work was cut short with a black card in the final quarter.

Shane Killoran and Conor O’Driscoll exchanged points after the restart but Kevin Moore’s second free of the game edged UL into a lead they never surrendered.

Killoran struck for their opening goal after 44 minutes to put them five ponts in front but Paudie Quill responded straight away with a neat finish low to the net.

Bryan O’Shea sealed victory for UL with a goal in the closing stages, with Tralee centre-back picking up a red card in the closing stages of an entertaining game.
