Club Championships round-up
Former Kerry star, Kieran Donaghy, helped Austin Stacks to victory over Dr. Crokes in the Kerry Senior Club Championship Final.
Austin Stacks won the Kerry senior club championship title yesterday after a 1-21 to 1-15 victory over reigning champions Dr. Crokes in Austin Stack Park.
An early Johnny Buckley goal helped Dr. Crokes into a 1-4 to 0-2 lead, but Stacks steadily warmed to the occasion.
Six unanswered points testified to their growing dominance and they then landed a really important blow just before half-time when Darragh O’Brien converted a penalty won by Kieran Donaghy.
Stacks led by 1-9 to 1-8 at half-time and there was still just a point between the teams midway through the second-half.
But four points from Sean Quilter gave Stacks a winning momentum in the final quarter and they finished the game with a flourish to win their first Kerry senior club championship since 2016.
It was a decisive day in the Kerry Intermediate Club Championship too as Templenoe and An Ghaeltacht won their respective semi-finals.
Templenoe powered to a 3-20 to 1-11 win over Glenflesk, while An Ghaeltacht eventually overcame a stubborn Dromid Pearses outfit by a scoreline of 1-15 to 1-9.
In Kildare, Moorefield got their quest for a third SFC title in a row off to the perfect start with a 1-11 to 0-7 victory over Naas on Saturday.
Moorefield were inspired by Eanna O’Connor who scored his team’s goal in the opening minutes and finished with a personal tally of 1-7.
In Saturday’s other Kildare SFC preliminary round ties Clane defeated Eadestown 2-9 to 1-15, Celbridge defeated neighbours Maynooth 0-13 to 0-11, and Castledermot defeated Raheens 1-12 to 1-6.
There were also three matches in the Kildare SFC yesterday. Last year’s beaten finalists, Athy, produced arguably the biggest result of the day when they defeated 2016 champions Sarsfields by 1-1-13 to 0-14.
Darroch Mulhall was the main man for the winners, scoring a goal after just two minutes and troubling the Sarsfields defence on a consistent basis thereafter as he finished with a personal tally of 1-3.
Daniel Flynn, who recently returned from a spell in the US, scored two points from play for Johnstownbridge in their 1-13 to 0-13 victory over Carbury. While Confey enjoyed a 1-15 to 2-7 win over Two Mile House.
There was some notable news from the weekend’s club League action in Monaghan as county midfielder, Niall Kearns, returned to action for his club Sean McDermotts after undergoing heart surgery last October.
