Connacht Senior Football Championship

Mayo 2-21 New York 2-6

This was a satisfactory outing at Gaelic Park for Mayo, who registered a win with the minimum of fuss.

Now an intriguing Connacht SFC Semi-Final encounter against Roscommon beckons for Mayo.

Last year's provincial loss to Roscommon hurt Mayo, but the green and red were never in any danger against New York, who battled admirably.

The opening period belonged to Ryan O'Donoghue, who was in splendid attacking form for Mayo.

Belmullet clubman O'Donoghue caused New York significant bother, kicking 1-9, as Mayo departed 1-11 to 0-2 ahead at the turnaround.

Initially New York's physical and direct approach had caused Mayo some problems as they only trailed 0-5 to 0-2 after 20 minutes.

Former London forward Killian Butler was a threat inside for the home side, but as the half wore on Mayo became increasingly comfortable.

That was chiefly due to the excellence of O'Donoghue, who planted a 21st minute goal following a David McBrien pass.

Six further points from Mayo followed with O'Donoghue (five) and Jack Carney raising white flags to ensure Kevin McStay's charges departed armed with a commanding advantage.

Mayo pulled 1-14 to 0-3 clear when Paddy Durcan rifled over a sweet point, but New York summoned a gutsy response.

Butler crafted an opportunity for Frank O'Reilly, who thumped a delightful New York goal in the 42nd minute.

O'Donoghue, substitute Darren McHale, and Fergal Boland supplied points before New York netted a second goal in the 50th minute courtesy of Jamie Boyle.

Mayo added a major themselves in the 52nd minute when replacement Cillian O'Connor converted a penalty afer a foul by Cian O'Dea on Paul Towey.

Alan O'Mara's New York team remained spirited until the end, but Mayo's focus will quickly switch to the Dr Hyde Park tussle with Roscommon.
