Watch Again - Q&A Allianz Hurling League Final Launch
The last action of the 2016 Allianz Hurling League promises to be quite spectacular when Clare and Waterford meet in the Division 1 final in Semple Stadium, Thurles on Sunday (3.30). It will be the first time they have met in the Division 1 final and the first time they clashed in the Allianz Hurling League since March 2014 when Clare won by 5-18 to 0-20 in Ennis. Waterford were later relegated from 1A while Clare were relegated in the following season. Waterford won 1B last year and later took the title outright and now Clare, who topped 1B this season, are bidding to emulate that feat after coming out of the lower Division. Waterford are bidding to retain the Allianz Hurling League title for the first time while Clare are trying to win it for the first time since 1978. The last reached the final in 2005 when they lost to Kilkenny. At yesterday's launch in Croke Park, Waterford star Austin Gleeson admitted it would be a great boost for Waterford to win back to back Leagues for the first time in their history. He said: "It would be massive for us confidence-wise. Going into the Championship a good League run is a massive boost. There's a new Cup this year as well and it would be nice to be the last name on the old one and the first names on the new one. The two teams will be going all out for it on Sunday. "We've hard-hitting tough task ahead of us. We know they've stepped up their game since last year and getting over Kilkenny will have given them a lot of confidence. It's going be a big game, a real lung-buster on Sunday." That Clare victory over Kilkenny in the semi-final was proof positive that the 2013 All-Ireland Champions are back in top form this year after suffering a dip in fortunes for the past two seasons. Their free-scoring midfielder Colm Galvin admitted they are bringing a lot of momentum into Sunday's game. He said: "It's given us a bit of confidence I suppose. It was a great boost to the camp so it's all eyes ahead now. It's great to get the momentum and we'll hopefully be able to carry that into Sunday."
