Oral History

Patsy Connolly and Gerard Devine

Gerard Devine and Patsy Connolly discuss the trials and tribulations of being involved in the GAA in Tyrone. They recall their days growing up and setting up their local club, Aghyaran. It took a collective effort from members of the community to keep the club going whether that was through playing, fundraising, organising or offering financial support. Gerard and Patsy recall both good times and bad, with emigration having a big effect on the club at times, and the Troubles also presenting difficulties. They built up important relationships with members of the clergy which helped the club to flourish, with success coming on the field in the late 1960s / early 1970s. Scór was also important to the people in Aghyaran, as were the fortunes of the Tyrone senior football team. Through their stories, Gerard and Patsy highlight the extraordinary efforts made by local people in order to make the GAA in the community a success. They remember each step of the way and acknowledge the contribution of a wide range of individuals to the cause that is Aghyaran GAA.
