Oral History

Derry O'Donovan

Derry O'Donovan talks about his GAA experiences across Ireland. He grew up in Ballinspittle in Cork and played for his local club, Courcey Rovers. He went to university at UCC and UCD and played there, as well as returning to Cork for club games. His professional career has taken him to Roscommon, Kilkenny and back to Dublin, and he always kept up his GAA involvement. Derry has strong opinions on many issues related to the GAA - modernisation, urbanisation, professionalism and volunteerism. He has also written a book on his club in Ballinspittle. Through work and university Derry became acquainted with many famous GAA figures - both players and administrators. His knowledge of GAA matters is vast and his enthusiasm for the Association remains undimmed after 65 years.
