Wexford dominate Camogie All Star nominations

The nominations for the 2010 Camogie All Stars in association with O'Neills were announced with All Ireland Champions Wexford and finalists Galway dominating the shortlist of 45 nominees.

Wexford, this year's Gala All Ireland and National League champions have received eleven nominations as have defeated All Ireland finalists Galway.

Cork, who were aiming for a ninth consecutive All Ireland final appearance this season received 9 nominations followed by National League finalists Kilkenny on 8. Tipperary received 3; Munster neighbours Clare have 2 nominations while Dublin have one.

The winners will be announced at a gala banquet in the Citywest Hotel on Saturday, November 6th.

Wexford Captain Una Leacy and sister Mary will be hoping to top off a remarkable sporting season having received All Star nominations at centre forward and centre back respectively. Katrina Parrock, who received the Player of the Match award for her All Ireland final display will be looking to secure her first All Star as will team mates Claire O'Connor, Karen Atkinson, Josie O'Dwyer, Noleen Lambert and joint championship top-scorer Ursula Jacob.

Galway have been rewarded for their consistent displays with captain Therese Maher, forwards Brenda Hanney, Veronica Curtin, Tara Rutledge and top scorer Aislinn Connolly all nominated.

Cork who were bidding for a record number of All Ireland final appearances have nine nominations in total with Gemma O'Connor in contention for a seventh consecutive All Star. Jennifer O'Leary, an All Star in 2007 receives a nomination following her return to championship action this season after a two year break.

Tipperary, who captured this year's Munster Camogie Championship have ace attacker Claire Grogan, defender Mary Ryan and midfielder Jill Horan all in contention. Clare forwards Deirdre Murphy and Fiona Lafferty have been rewarded for their performances while Dublin's sole nominee, Louise O'Hara will hope to add to her 2006 All Star.

All counties competing in this year's Gala Senior Camogie Championships have received nominations.

Commenting on today's announcement Joan O'Flynn President of the Camogie Association:

"This year's Gala All Ireland Camogie Championship has been of top quality with seven teams vying for the honour of senior All Ireland champions. A hugely exciting and competitive championship produced outstanding games of great skill, athleticism, passion and commitment with Wexford claiming the senior crown.

The All Stars acknowledge outstanding individual displays over the course of the year. All players were graded under specific criteria before a list of 45 of the country's senior inter-county camogie players were decided upon. For those that received a nomination it is a testament to their tremendous sporting calibre. I am delighted that this particular group of players from seven counties will be afforded national recognition for their excellent displays during the year. We look forward to the announcement of the 2010 All Star Team on November 6th."
