Walsh: Cork still fighting for semi-final spot

Cork star Aidan Walsh reckons there is still one semi-final place in Division I of the Allianz Football League that the Rebels are in the hunt for.

Cork are now in sixth place in the table on two points after picking up their first win of the campaign at the weekend against Down in Newry. It took a goal with the last kick of the game from Ciarán Sheehan to give Cork the win, with the move leading to it stemming from a superb piece of individual work from Walsh.

With three teams, Dublin, Kildare and Tyrone, all on six points following three successive wins, Walsh thinks the last semi-final place is up for grabs between the rest, although he admits that staying up is now Cork's priority following their slow start in tier one.

"We would be just delighted to stay up, in the position that we are in. Dublin and Kildare and Tyrone have three wins under their belt. I suppose there's one team there that can take the last semi-final place the way things are going," he said.

"We'll just take every game as it comes and if it comes down to the last game or two and if it's possible to get to the semi-finals, then we'll go for that."

Cork travel to Omagh next Sunday to take on one of the three teams on six points, Tyrone, and Walsh is eager to face a county he has yet to play against in his senior Cork career.

"We're just looking forward to next weekend. My first time ever playing against Tyrone. It's a game I'm looking forward to and it will be a big test.

"Up in Omagh, it will be very tough after they won against Donegal. It was a great win for them. The confidence will be high. We're just looking forward to it and hopefully we'll build on it (the win against Down)."

That win could prove very important come the end of the league, as had Sheehan not goaled in injury-time, Cork would be where Down are now - joint bottom of the table with Kerry on zero points. Walsh said the result and the nature of how it panned out summed out how fine the margins now are in Division I.

"There's a thin line there between going up and maybe getting to the semi-final. I suppose ourselves and Down were in the same position. We had both lost the first two games and it was a big game for both teams. We're just delighted that we came out with the points. But we know ourselves we have to pick it up. We're still not safe, we have to put in the performances if we're going to stay up this year."

As for the goal itself at the end, Walsh explained his thinking before winning a ball which led to the score.

"Conor and the selectors always say 'never give up, keep going, keep going'. It looked like Down were trying to pass the ball to themselves and just trying to kill time.

"I went for it. Other days it probably wouldn't have come off but it did that day. I couldn't believe when I looked up and Fintan (Goold) was in 20 yards of space inside their 45. It just came off.

"I suppose when Fintan took the shot I'd say it was nearly going wide and Ciarán popped up. A pure stroke of luck but we'll take it. It's a great way to win but it's an awful way to lose for teams."

Looking ahead to the rest of the league, Walsh says Dublin, who defeated Cork in Round 1, appear to be ahead of everyone else at the moment, and he put Cork's own struggles so far down to a few reasons, which he hopes they will be able to rectify in the coming weeks.

"Dublin are a step above a lot of teams at the moment. They seem to be playing a lot of good stuff. We blooded in a few young players this year, a few new players. And it takes a while for everyone to gel together. We weren't playing as fluently as we do in a lot of games. Maybe that was the reason. We're just not sharp enough yet.

"In periods of the game (v Down) we played some very good football. At the start of the second half we stepped it up. But we sat back again and it's something we have to figure out why we are doing that."

Aidan Walsh was speaking at the launch of the GAA Tackling Bullying campaign , which was also attended by Leo Varadkar T.D., Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, and Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Liam Ó Néill. GAA Tackling Bullying, Croke Park, Dublin. Click here for more information.
