Sunday's Football Results and Round-Up

Bord Na Móna O'Byrne Cup 2012 (Leinster)Carlow 0-10 Dublin 0-17, Carlow, 2.00pm

GAA All-Ireland Football Champions Dublin opened their 2012 campaign with a win in the Bord Na Móna O'Byrne Cup with against Carlow with a seven point victory.

Carlow did manage to put it up to an under strength Dublin team after the break but the All Ireland Champions managed to pull away in the closing stages of the second half.

Dublin captain Bryan Cullen got his side up and running in 2012 with the first score of the afternoon followed by a brace from Michael McCarthy and Michael Darragh Macauley to lead at the break 0-6 to 0-4.

Points from Brendan Murphy and Daniel St. Ledger got Carlow back into the game after the break but just as they looked to get back into the game Macauley, subsitutue Tomás Quinn and Diarmuid Connelly stepped it up a gear and extended the Dubs advantage to run out comfortable winners in the end.

Meath 1-13 Wexford 1-10, Navan, 2.00PM

Meath, like their Leinster rivals Dublin, got off to a good start to with a three point victory over Wexford.

Points from Graham Reilly and Tom Walsh, the pair combining throughout the game, helped the Royals get off the mark and raced into a seven point lead in the opening minutes of the game.

Wexford struggled to find their way in the first half of the game and that was told by the half time score of 0-11 to 1-3 in favour of Seamus McEnaney's men.

Eric Bradley and Kevin O'Grady managed to get early scores for Jason Ryan's side just after the restart as Meath found scores hard to come by against the stiff breeze.

However that combination of Reilly and Walsh linked up again as Walsh rattled home Meath's goal only goal of the game and got his side back on track.

Both sides exchanged points throughout the second half with a mini revival coming from Wexford in the form of Adrian Flynn and Paudie Kelly but Meath held on for the win.

Power NI Dr McKenna Cup 2012 (Ulster)Down 2-12 Armagh 0-10, Páirc Esler, Newry Section B, Round 1, Section B, Round 1, 2.00PM

Benny Coulter's second half appearance for Down helped them run out easy winners over Armagh in the opening round of the Power NI Dr McKenna Cup for 2012.

A Ryan Brady goal in the early stages of the first half saw Down set the tone for this game and helped them progress through this game with relative ease.

Points from Marcus Miskelly and Brady put Down in total control and the best for Armagh came from Billy Joe Padden to leave the sides 1-7 to 0-5 at the break.

Ryan Rafferty, Micheal O'Rourke and a Liam Doyle free added to a Mourne County's lead after the restart.Conor Laverty put the game beyond reach for Armagh with his second half goal, that showed a collective impressive performance from the Down team.

New Galway manager Alan Mulholland was brought back to earth after his midweek victory over Sligo I.T. with a defeat today again N.U.I.G.

The new manager used this outing as an experimenting game to try out new faces so too did NUIG as they host the Sigerson Cup this year.

It was the students who started the better in this game and raced into a 0-5 to 0-1 lead after just twenty minutes of the game with three of those points coming from Mayo's Neil Douglas.

However the game did get tighter and one point separated the sides at half time 0-5 to 0-4.Michael Martin and Niall Coleman pointed shortly after the break it looked like the inexperienced Galway side would push on from there.

Kevin Conlon and Douglas were on hand with points for the students helping them back into the game and a second half substitution Ian Galvin goal turned the game in NUIG's favour and Galway never recovered after that.
