Liam O'Connor RIP
The death has been announced of former Offaly footballer Liam O'Connor. He was 58.
He was a member of the Offaly team that famously defeated Kerry in the 1982 All-Ireland senior football final, and it was his pass that set up Seamus Darby for the iconic winning goal - one of the most famous moments in the history of the GAA.
Michael O'Hehir's commentary for the goal ran as follows:
"This is Liam Connor, the full-back. A high, lobbing, dropping ball in towards the goalmouth. A shot, a goal! A goal, a goal for Offaly! There was a goal in it! A goal. Oh what a goal! And Offaly lead in the dying moments!"
Liam O'Connor played for Walsh Island, and was a member of the famous Connor football family. His brother Tomás played in the 1982 final alongside him, as did his cousins Richie and Matt.
He is survived by his wife Maria, sons Mark, Thomas, Matthew, Luke and Andrew, daughter Emily, mother Nanette, sister Marian McGee and his brothers Murt and Tomás.
