The Mayo County Board have confirmed that former Connacht rugby player Gavin Duffy has been released from their squad.

Duffy, who played minor football for Mayo in 1999 before becoming a professional rugby player, was called up to their panel by former manager James Horan last summer.

However, Duffy didn't feature in a single competitive game for the county because of issues over his eligibility, arising from the fact that he plays for Salthill-Knocknacarra, in Co Galway.

He did eventually pull on a Mayo jersey in a recent challenge game against Clare, but has failed to make the cut for the remainder of the season,

Duffy is one of eight players joint-managers Noel Connelly and Pat Holmes have released back to their clubs, with Enda Varley and Adam Gallagher among the other high-profile departures.

Meanwhile, the Mayo County Board have also confirmed that a number of players have been ruled out of Sunday's Allianz Football League Division I clash with Monaghan through injury, including Andy Moran, Alan Dillon, Mickey Conroy and Jason Gibbons.
