New York v Mayo - Connacht GAA Football Senior Championship Preliminary Round
Galway name team for trip to New York
Galway have named their team for the traditional Connacht Championship opener against New York in Gaelic Park on Sunday (8pm Irish time).
Johnny Duane (ankle) and Danny Cummins (hamstring) have recovered from injuries and are named in Kevin Walsh's side, while midfielder Tom Flynn is included on the bench.
Flynn underwent knee surgery in February and missed most of Galway's Allianz League campaign, but the Athenry totem featured in a challenge game against Dublin recently and is expected to play some part in The Bronx. In his absence, Paul Conroy partners Fiontán Ó Curraoin at midfield from the start.
Elsewhere, Brian O'Donoghue has fought off competition from Corofin's Tom Healy for the No. 1 jersey in the continued absence of first choice goalkeeper Manus Breathnach.
Three of the Corofon side that won the All-Ireland club title on St Patrick's Day have been selected by Tribesmen manager Kevin Walsh from the start - Liam Silke, Gary Sice and Micheál Lundy.
Gareth Bradshaw (ankle) and Damien Comer (mouth) are named on the bench despite suffering injuries in Galway's final Allianz League game against Kildare, a 3-12 to 1-12 victory on April 5.
The Galway squad flew out to New York on Thursday morning, and they will be hoping for a much smoother experience than their last trip to the Big Apple in 2010, when their return journey was severely disrupted by the ash cloud from an Icelandic volcano.
GALWAY (SF v New York): Brian O'Donoghue; Johnny Duane, Finian Hanley, Cathal Sweeney; Liam Silke, Gary O'Donnell, Seán Denvir; Fiontán Ó Curraoin, Paul Conroy; Gary Sice, Shane Walsh, Michael Lundy; Peadar Ó Gríofa, Patrick Sweeney, Danny Cummins.
