Cork SHC: Glen Rovers end 26-year wait
Cork Senior Hurling Championship Final: Glen Rovers 2-17 Sarsfields 1-13
Glen Rovers are the Cork senior hurling champions for the first time in 26 years after they overcame Sarsfields at Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday afternoon.
Cork star Patrick Horgan scored nine points for the northside club, who move to outright second on the roll of honour behind Blackrock, while David Cunningham's input of 1-2 was key. Captain Graham Callanan was the undisputed man of the match, putting on an incredible display at wing-back.
Cunningham's goal in the 49th minute came with the Glen leading by 0-15 to 0-11 as the vast majority at the first senior final played at the venue were expected a late surge from the previous champions Sars.
After good work by Conor Dorris and David Busteed, Cunningham finished smartly and a second goal five minutes later by defender David Dooling put them 2-16 to 0-12 in front.Sars, winners of four of the previous seven titles but never having achieved back-to-back championships, did come back slightly as Cian McCarthy scored a goal and a point, but Horgan capped the win in injury time.
The first half had seen the sides level on six different occasions, with Gavin O'Loughlin on form for Sars, but late points from Horgan and Cunningham gave the Glen a 0-10 to 0-8 half-time lead and they built on that early in the second half.
