Camogie stars honoured for fine performances
Eight of the country's top camogie stars were honoured at a gala lunch at Croke Park Hotel, this afternoon for their impressive displays throughout the Gala Senior Camogie Championship.
Wexford's All Ireland winning duo, Mary Leacy and team-mate Aoife O'Connor, along with Galway star Brenda Hanney were among the recipients.
In association with the Irish Daily Star and Gala, players were chosen for their top-class displays during the championship. Galway, this year's All-Ireland finalists, picked up three awards with wing-forward Brenda Hanney, sharpshooter Aislinn Connolly and wing-back Regina Glynn all selected. Cork trio Gemma O'Connor, Jennifer O'Leary and Anna Geary (a double recipient) were also feted.
Wexford's Mary Leacy, collected on the double for her performances against Tipperary and in the All-Ireland semi-final win over Kilkenny with wing-back Aoife O'Connor also rewarded for her display against the Cats, during the round-robin stages of the championship.
President of the Camogie Association Joan O'Flynn said: "The Camogie Association would like to congratulate all of this year's recipients who were noteworthy for their fantastic displays during an extremely exciting championship.
"We would also like to acknowledge the support of Gala, our championship sponsors, whose commitment to the association, is reflected in yet another great initiative. And finally, to the Irish Daily Star, we are very thankful for their strong and consistent coverage of camogie. As an association we are constantly striving to increase our profile and naturally we rely upon the media for this. The Irish Daily Star have been excellent throughout this season in support of our goal."
