- Conor McGrath (Clare) 2,191 votes (28.8 per cent)
Shane Bennett (Waterford)
What made Shane Bennett’s powerful performance for Waterford on Sunday extra-impressive was that he didn’t let his own imperfections rattle him.
The Ballysaggart teenager hit some uncharacteristic wides from frees, but his mental resolve never wavered and he was easily Waterford’s most consistent and forceful forward.
He scored three cracking points from play, and his ability to win hard ball and then run at the Clare defence created space and opportunity for others. If Bennett is already this good, you really do have to wonder just how high his ceiling will be.
Eoin Price (Westmeath)
Westmeath’s 2-22 to 1-11 win over Offaly in the Leinster Championship was easily the hurling result of the weekend. They completely dominated their illustrious Midlands neighbours, and no-one hurt the Faithful County more than Lake County wing-forward Eoin Price.
The Clonkill clubman scored 1-5 from play, and the goal he scored a minute from time was a real beauty.
Price has been a stalwart for Westmeath since 2007, and Westmeath fans will not have been surprised by the quality of his play on Sunday. He’s a powerful, clinical attacker, who deserves to have his talent exposed to a wider audience.
Conor McGrath (Clare)
There were a whopping 39 wides hit in the Sunday’s Allianz Hurling League Final between Clare and Waterford, but that just made McGrath’s metronomic accuracy from both frees and open play even more impressive.
He scored 0-13, 10 of them from frees, and he showed nerves of tungsten for the one he nailed from a tight angle on the stroke of full-time to bring the game into extra-time.
The three he scored from play confirmed once again what we already knew about McGrath – he’s a seriously classy hurler. The sweetness and economy of his swing makes him both an accurate shooter and a devilishly difficult man to hook for defenders.
