GAA Healthy Club Project- Applications Now Open!

GAA clubs are invited to submit expressions of interest (EoI) to join phase 4 of the Healthy Club Project. The EoI will be open until Friday November 15th 2019. 150 clubs will be chosen to commence in phase 4 and successful clubs will be notified by Friday December 20th 2019. Interested? APPLY HERE NOW

Successful clubs will attend the National Healthy Club Orientation Day in Croke Park on Saturday February 1st, 2020. The project lasts 18 months and clubs that complete the programme will be recognised as an “Official Healthy Club” in Croke Park in October 2021.

Clubs engaged in the project will receive the following;

• Training and support throughout the project from the County Health and Wellbeing Committees and the Community and Health Department

• A Grant to be used for Healthy Club Activities

• A Starter Pack (Healthy Club Banner and Manual)

• Apparel (Half Zip for the Healthy Club Team)

• Opportunity for your club to be recognised locally and nationally

• Opportunity to become an Official Healthy Club, supported by Irish Life and Healthy Ireland

What’s Expected?

The Healthy Club Team will be expected to attend 6 meetings/events throughout the 18 months;

• The National Orientation Day on February 1st 2020

• The National Healthy Club Conference October/November 2020 (Date TBC)

• Provincial Healthy Club Forums X3 (Date TBC April/May 2020, January/February 2021 and May/June 2021)

• The Healthy Club Recognition/ Awards Day October 2021 (Date TBC)

The Healthy Club Team will also have to complete a minimum of 2 initiatives over the 18th months. Clubs are welcome to complete more than 2 initiatives throughout the cycle but the minimum for accreditation is 2 initiatives. The Healthy Club Team will also complete the Healthy Club Portal over the course of the Project. Training will be provided on the Healthy Club Portal.

• Ireland Lights Up (in collaboration with Get Ireland Walking and Operation Transformation)

• Recipes for Success (Healthy Eating Programme for GAA players) 

• Men on the Move Programme (in Collaboration with the Local Sports Partnership and HSE) 

• Smoke Free Grounds (with the support of HSE/PHA)

• Samaritans “the Huddle” Project (Samaritans and GAA Partnership)

• Social Initiative Projects (Engaging Older Members of the Community)

• GAA Fun and Run Project (A game for people of all abilities)

FAQs

1. When did the Healthy Club Project Begin? 

The Healthy Club Project began in 2013 with 16 clubs (Phase 1), a further 40 clubs were recruited in Phase 2 in 2015 (58 in total) and in 2017 92 clubs commenced in phase 3 with 84 of those receiving recognition as an “Official Healthy Club” on October 5th. There are now 142 Official Healthy Clubs across the island of Ireland. 

2. What Does Phase 4 Mean? 

Phase 4 is the 4th cycle of the Healthy Club Project. The new phase 4 clubs (150) will engage in the same process as the phase 3 clubs, taking 18 months to complete in total. At the end of the project they will be recognised as an “Official Healthy Club” alongside phase 1,2 and 3 clubs. Official Healthy Club Recognition lasts for 4 years (for example phase 3 clubs will not have to reapply until phase 5 (commencing January 2022).  

3. How Are Clubs Chosen for Phase 4? 

Applications will be independently screened and scored taking into consideration what clubs have done in Health and Wellbeing before, what clubs intend to do and why being involved in the Healthy Club Project would benefit their club and community.
