Andy Moran and Joe Canning have been crowned Footballer and Hurler of the Year at the PwC GAA/GPA All-Star awards.

The announcement of these prestigious accolades, voted on exclusively by inter-county players, was the crescendo finish to the PwC GAA/GPA All-Star gala event in Dublin’s Convention Centre on Friday night, with the Mayo footballer and Galway hurler victorious.

The Footballer of the Year prize was the second big win of the night for Ballaghaderreen ace Moran. The 34-year-old was earlier chosen at left corner forward on the PwC Football All-Star team – picking up his second All-Star in the process, and a first since 2011.

The ever-green Moran was the fulcrum of the attack in Mayo’s marathon 10-game Championship season, where he produced a series of inspirational performances. It means the Footballer of the Year prize stays in Mayo, after Lee Keegan was chosen 12 months ago.

In hurling, Portumna’s Joe Canning collected his fourth Hurling All-Star on the night, as Galway dominated the PwC All-Star Hurling selection with seven positions.

He was then given the overall recognition for his role in guiding the Tribesmen’s All-Ireland winning team with the selection by his peers as Hurler of the Year, after a season where the 29-year-old was central to their first Liam MacCarthy Cup victory since 1988.

Canning’s selection is also the first Galway player to be Hurler of the Year since Tony Keady, who was chosen in 1988, and who sadly passed away on the eve of this year’s All-Ireland final.

Elsewhere, a dream season for Con O’Callaghan continued as the 21 year-old from Dublin was chosen as PwC GAA/GPA Young Footballer of the Year. It completes a remarkable season that saw the Cuala starlet win a Club Hurling All-Ireland, Senior and U21 All-Ireland football finals and be chosen at wing forward on the PwC Football All-Stars.

The PwC GAA/GPA Young Hurler of the Year is Galway and Kinvara’s Conor Whelan who has made a massive impact in their attack and was prolific in their march to the Leinster and All-Ireland senior titles.

Uachtarán CLG Aogán Ó Fearghail said: "We salute Andy, Joe, Con and Conor on their magnificent achievement in being voted Players of the Year by their peers, and I know this will mean so much to your family, friends, and also your Clubs who you represent so well."

Dermot Earley, GPA Chief Executive commented: "Particular congratulations must also go to Mayo's Andy Moran (Footballer of the Year) and Galway's Joe Canning (Hurler of the Year).

"To be voted as the standout performer in a season by your fellow inter-county players is a wonderful achievement while Young Footballer of the Year Con O'Callaghan and Young Hurler of the Year Conor Whelan can be hugely proud that their performances have also been recognised by their peers."

Commenting on the announcement, Feargal O'Rourke, Managing Partner, PwC, said: "I would like to commend this year's PwC GAA/GPA Players of the Year and Young Players of the Year, who tonight have been recognised for their outstanding contribution this season. I wish them all every success in their future careers."
