Electric Ireland, proud sponsor of the Electric Ireland Camogie Minor Championships and the Electric Ireland GAA Minor Championships, has today released Season Three, Episode Five of the ‘GAA Minor Moments’ podcast, featuring Dublin legend and former Minor player, Alan Brogan.

Reflecting on his illustrious career, Brogan candidly shared his reflections on his Minor days and the pivotal moments that helped to shape his journey to the Footballer of The Year title in 2011. Alan, who played for the Dublin Minor team in 1999 and 2000, fondly recalls winning the Leinster Minor final in 1999 against Wexford after a replay. The atmosphere was electric, especially as the games were often held before Senior matches, providing a special opportunity for the young players. At that time Alan was a wing-back, and he vividly remembers scoring a goal and a point in the semi-final against Down, a game that ultimately saw them lose to a team led by the immense talent of Benny Coulter. Down went on to win the All-Ireland that year, but the experience of scoring at Croke Park as a 17-year-old remains a treasured memory for Alan.

Alan’s journey to the Minor team was not straightforward – as he was a late addition to the squad, coming in around May or June. Despite this, he quickly made an impact, forming lasting friendships and rivalries that would mirror his Senior career. Reflecting on his Minor years, Alan emphasises the importance of these early experiences in elite sport, noting how they set the stage for his subsequent success. His father too played a crucial role in his development, taking Alan and his siblings to the athletics track to enhance their athleticism, rather than just honing their football skills.

The Brogan family background in sport outside of the GAA also contributed significantly to Alan’s development in football. His father was not only a former basketball player for Ireland, but also a very successful 100m sprinter. The athletic genes from his parents, coupled with the structure provided by development squads, paved the way for Alan’s rise through the ranks from Minor to Senior. Despite the physicality which is now championed in the modern game, Alan attributes the dedication to honing his skills from a young age as being instrumental in his success.

Electric Ireland’s ‘GAA Minor Moments’ Podcast will air on Tuesdays throughout the Electric Ireland Camogie & GAA Minor Championships as well-known Irish stars share memories from their early sporting careers, reflecting on the defining moments from playing Minor and how it shaped them, both on and off the pitch.

Season Three Episode One featured Kilkenny camogie legend, Ann Downey, with Episode Two featuring former Tipperary player and author Eimear Ryan, Episode Three featuring former Antrim Camogie captain Jane Adams, and Episode Four featuring current Head Coach of Team USA Boxing, Billy Walsh. This season, Fergal will be joined by a host of excellent guests including Richie Hogan, Tony Griffin and many more as they reflect on their time spent playing Minor and shed light on some great personal stories.
