This Saturday and Sunday (February 5th and 6th) will see Croke Park play host to the AIB GAA Hurling All-Ireland Junior and Intermediate Club Championship Finals, and the AIB GAA Football All-Ireland Junior and Intermediate Club Championship Finals in what is set to be an exciting weekend of GAA club action.
This year’s AIB GAA and Camogie Club Championships campaign celebrates #TheToughest players in Gaelic Games, those who, despite logic, can’t quit, but persevere no matter how tough it gets because it’s who they are. For them, it’s about never giving up and never giving in, because Tough Can’t Quit - and this weekend’s games are set to be no exception.
The AIB GAA Hurling All-Ireland Junior and Intermediate Club Championship finals get the action underway on Saturday, February 5th, with the first game of the double header throwing in at 3pm. Cork champions Ballygiblin take on Mooncoin of Kilkenny in the Junior showpiece, and the Cork outfit come into the game following a comprehensive win over Manchester’s Fullen Gaels in the All-Ireland semi-final. Mooncoin, meanwhile, defeated Salthill-Knocknacarra in their All-Ireland semi-final clash to tee up an interesting final this weekend.
The Intermediate decider gets underway at 5pm and sees Kerry’s Kilmoyley GAA going head-to-head with Kildare champions, Naas Hurling Club at 5pm. Kilmoyley became the first Kerry side to ever win the AIB Munster GAA Hurling Intermediate Club Championship title and went on to triumph over Derry outfit, Banagher, in the All-Ireland semi-final. Naas Hurling Club meanwhile landed the AIB Leinster GAA Hurling Intermediate Club Championship title with victory over Oylegate-Glenbrien of Wexford, before delivering a powerful display against Mayo’s Tooreen in their All-Ireland semi-final tie.
Croke Park will also play host to the second double header of the weekend on Sunday, February 6th, as the AIB GAA Football All-Ireland Junior and Intermediate Club Championship finals throw in from 1.30pm. First up is the Junior final where Mayo’s Kilmeena face Gneeveguilla of Kerry. Gneeveguilla defeated Denn GAA (Cavan) to reach this weekend’s final, while Kilmeena of Mayo put on a strong attacking display against Offaly’s Clonbullogue in their semi-final showdown.
In the Intermediate final, Trim GAA (Meath) meet Steelstown Brian Óg’s (Derry) at 3.30pm. Trim come into the game after edging out St Faithleach’s of Roscommon in a gripping semi-final match-up, prevailing on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-11. Steelstown Brian Óg’s of Derry, meanwhile, got the better of Na Gaeil of Kerry in their semi-final – having previously bested Moortown of Tyrone to lift the Ulster title, in what has been an incredible season to date for the club, that saw them taste championship success for the first time in 34 years.
Speaking ahead of the finals, Colin Hunt, Chief Executive Officer at AIB, commented: “On behalf of AIB, I would like to congratulate all eight teams in action this weekend on making it to the GAA All-Ireland finals. As sponsors of the GAA Club Championships since 1990, we have seen the progression of teams through the Junior and Intermediate grades year after year and know the dedication these players apply to their craft. We are delighted to see the return of fans in their numbers to Croke Park. Along with the dedication of the players, it is the supporters of these clubs around the country that truly make the AIB GAA Club Championships the unique competitions that they are. We thank you for your continuous support of your players and management and hope you enjoy this weekend’s matches.”
Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael, Larry McCarthy commented: “We are thrilled to welcome the players, management and supporters of all eight finalists here to Croke Park for the climax of the AIB GAA Hurling and Football All-Ireland Junior and Intermediate Club Championships. The provincial and semi-final fixtures produced incredibly exciting matches, and I’m sure this weekend’s showpieces will be no different. The uniqueness of the GAA Club Championships is seen in the varied representation in Croke Park this weekend, with clubs from seven counties and all four provinces. In what has been another challenging season, I would like to thank our sponsors AIB for their unwavering support of this great competition, which is testament to what the GAA is all about – community. With this in mind, we also look forward to welcoming back the supporters of all finalists to Croke Park. We’ve no doubt it’s set to be another fantastic weekend of GAA action.”
