Jonjo Farrell named GAA.ie Hurling Player of the Week
Hurling Player of the Week Jonjo Farrell.
Kilkenny forward Jonjo Farrell has been named GAA.ie Hurling Player of the Week.
Farrell was immense for Brian Cody's team during Saturday's Leinster SHC semi-final success over Dublin at O'Moore Park, Portlaoise.
It was a particularly close vote this week with Farrell earning slightly more than runner-up Kenny Feeney, who continues to impress for Mayo.
GAA.ie Hurling Player of the Week
1: Jonjo Farrell (Kilkenny) - 2167 votes (35.1 per cent)
**2: **Kenny Feeney (Mayo) - 2157 votes (35 per cent)
3: Andrew Mackin (Louth) - 1847 votes (29.9 per cent)
Twenty seven year old Jonjo Farrell is something of a late bloomer. He's been on the Kilkenny panel for the past few years, but didn't make his Championship debut until Saturday's Leinster Semi-Final win over Dublin.
On the basis of his performance in that match, he was overdue the opportunity because he was outstanding as he scored a whopping 1-5 from play.
His finishing wasn't the only aspect of his play that stood out. He's an absolute workaholic, and the manner in which he grafted and fought for every ball surely brought a smile to Brian Cody's face.
It's a testament to Kenny Feeney's consistency that he is nominated for Hurler of the Week for the second week in a row.
He followed up his Man of the Match performance in the Nicky Rackard Cup Final with another tour de force on Saturday as Mayo defeated Derry in the Christy Ring Promotion/Relegation Play-Off.
The Tooren club-man scored 11 points, three of them from play, as the Derry defence found him too hot to handle.
Andrew Mackin was Louth's super-sub in the Lory Meagher Cup Final two weekends again when he came off the bench and scored 1-2.
He proved that was no fluke by turning in a sensational performance when given the opportunity to start Saturday's Nicky Rackard Promotion/Relegation clash with Fermanagh.
Mackin led the Fermanagh defence a merry dance by scoring 4-4 from play as Louth stormed to an impressive victory.
