MARY I 3-20 TRINITY COLLEGE 3-12

DJ Carey’s IT Carlow qualified for the quarter-finals of this year’s Fitzgibbon Cup when Jack Fagan scored both goals in a 2-16 to 1-16 win over NUI Galway at Dangan.

Last year’s beaten finalists registered a 1-22 to 0-22 win over Mary Immaculate College on Sunday, and they backed that performance up, even though they trailed by 1-9 to 0-8 at half-time in Galway.

“This is a great win. We knew coming up here it was going to be a really tough one. We are in the quarter-final and topping the group at this stage,” said Carey.

The hosts began well, and after Martin Kavanagh gave IT Carlow a 0-2 to 0-1 lead, John Fox pirouetted and finished past Enda Rowland for the lead goal in the fifth minute.

NUI Galway boasted a starting 15 including All-Ireland winners Conor Whelan, Padraic Mannion and Cathal Mannion. And the latter scored a stunning effort to give them a 1-9 to 0-6 lead with just one minute of normal time remaining at the end of the first-half.

But IT Carlow scored 1-6 to Conor Whelan’s solitary effort between then and 38th minute. Fagan’s first goal arrived when he kicked to the net, after Kavanagh’s long pass.

The crucial second goal came in the 51st minute when goalkeeper Rowland sent in another big delivery, and Fagan flicked to the net past Shane Hennessy.

In the other Group D tie reigning two-time champions Mary Immaculate College defeated Trinity College 3-20 to 3-12 on the 4G pitch at the University of Limerick.

Jamie Wall’s side held a 1-7 to 0-5 lead at half-time after Brian Corry’s goal, and further strikes from Tim O’Mahony and Michael Corry ensured Mary I got their first win of the competition.

Fionn Ó Riain Bron scored nine points for Trinity but despite his best efforts, and goals from Conor O’Carroll (two) and Donncha Butler they lost for the second time this week.

Donal Burke scored a goal for DCU as they continued their impressive start to the campaign in Group C, and hammered Garda College 2-22 to 0-8.

In Group B DIT secured a 3-19 to 1-19 win over WIT at Grangegorman, after they held a narrow 1-13 to 1-10 half-time lead.
