Westmeath's John Connellan an injury doubt for Leinster Final
John Connellan
John Connellan is Westmeath's only injury worry ahead of next Sunday's Leinster SFC Final against Dublin.
The exciting attacker is nursing a leg injury, and Westmeath manager Tom Cribbin says he'll wait until the last minute to make a final decision on whether or not to include him in the team.
“John Connellan is a bit of a knock," said Cribbin. "He’s 50-50, I’m hoping he’ll be okay. He done something with his ankle or his knee.
"I won’t push him because he’s not going to come forwards or go back in fitness in that length of time, he just doesn’t put up weight. He is all up here, in his head. He is just incredible. If he doesn’t train until the Friday night and he tells me he is okay…
“Or when I have to put in the programme, because if he’s not in the programme then I can pick him so before I put in the programme on a Thursday morning I will ring him and he will make the call himself. Even if it is till 50-50 I will put him on the programme in the chance that he is fit to play.”
Connellan's ability to drop deep, win ball, and get the Westmeath attack moving with his clever distribution and option-taking makes him a crucial cog in the team, so it's understandable Cribbin will give him every opportunity to prove his fitness.
“He is a leader on the pitch as well," says Cribbin. "He stays composed and he always seems to say the right thing to the lads when they are under pressure. He is a very good guy to have on the pitch.”
