Tyrone Senior Football Championship Final

TRILLICK: 1-12 DUNGANNON: 1-12 (Dungannon win 8-7 on penalties)

By Declan Bogue

DUNGANNON Thomas Clarkes bridged a gap back to 1956 to win their eleventh Tyrone senior Championship, and they showed once again that they love the drama of it all.

In their four Championship games against Loughmacrory, Ardboe, Errigal Ciaran and now Trillick, they have gone to extra-time and came out on top. Only this time there was added drama when it went to two rounds of penalties.

Ciaran Barker, the corner back who sunk Errigal Ciaran in the semi-final had missed his first penalty, clipping it over the bar. This time he sunk it to the absolute delirium of the boisterous support from the east of the county.

Trillick had opened up the better, topping the opening quarter with a beauty of a goal from Lee Brennan, but Dungannon's third quarter when they took a two point lead after hitting Trillick 1-4 to 0-1, gave them the belief that they were in this.

Indeed they might have snatched it at the end of normal time, only Patrick Quinn did not hold on to what would have been a straightforward 'mark.'

Extra time saw momentum swinging all over the place, and then it came. Penalties. No need for the details, but Dungannon entered their own Nirvana at the end.
