D1: Irresistible Rossies romp to 18-point victory
Senan Kilbride
**Allianz Football League Division 1: Roscommon 4-25 Cork 3-10 **
Roscommon produced an incredible display of attacking football as they got their second Allianz Football League Division 1 win, beating Cork by 18 points at Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday.
Leading by 2-13 to 1-7 at half-time, the visitors continued to push on in the second half, Ciarán Murtagh getting their third goal within four minutes of the restart and when he netted again on 54 minutes they led by 20 points, 4-21 to 2-7. Murtagh finished with 2-3 while Cathal Cregg and Senan Kilbride also got goals with Fintan Cregg scoring five points and Conor Devaney raising four white flags.
In total, they had 12 different scorers with only three of their points coming from frees. While Cork did have two goals from young full-forward Peter Kelleher, they were always struggling.
Kelleher’s first goal did tie the game at 1-2 to 0-5 in the 13th minute, but Roscommon responded with a point from full-back Neil Collins before Senan Kilbride’s goal, following a great win from Fintan Cregg’s pass.
Cathal Cregg got their second goal shortly before half-time when he profited from Ian Kilbride’s pass and that made it 2-11 to 1-6, points from David Murray and Enda Smith extending the advantage.
Kelleher almost had another Cork goal as the break loomed but even though captain Paul Kerrigan did have a point in injury time, nine points separated the sides on the turnover.
Fintan Cregg made it 10 after the resumption and then Murtagh’s shot beat Cork goalkeeper Ken O’Halloran, who did get a hand to it.
On 42, Kelleher did get his and Cork’s second goal but it was their only score in the first 20 minutes of the second half – a period in which Roscommon scored 2-8. Murtagh’s second goal, rounding off a lovely team move, capped a wonderful day for the Connacht side.
