Back in May a penalty shootout was required as Derry eventually defeated Monaghan in the Ulster MFC Final.

Now the teams return to the same venue - BOX-IT Athletic Grounds - for the next instalment with an All-Ireland title the prize for whoever prevails.

It has been a rewarding campaign for both counties, who have flourished on the provincial and national stages.

The respective managers, Damian McErlain and Dermot Malone, can reflect with real satisfaction on how their panels have coped throughout the campaign.

In the All-Ireland series both counties have fared impressively. Derry did what was required against Galway before overcoming Dublin in the last four.

Despite being reduced to 14 men for the second half, Derry still managed to eke out a 3-11 to 1-8 win.

Luke Grant, James Sargent, and Cahir Spiers all struck goals for Derry in that success, while Ger Dillon's five points were hugely relevant too.

Monaghan, who will contest a first All-Ireland minor final since 1939, enjoyed a 1-11 to 0-11 triumph over Kerry at Glenisk O'Connor Park in the semi-finals.

That match was decided by Tommy Mallen's goal on the cusp of half-time.

Max McGinnity is another highly regarded Monaghan forward, who has been in prolific scoring form throughout the Championship, while Seán Óg McElwain carries a threat inside too.
