NUIG and UL to contest Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup decider

Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup semi-finals

UL 0-14 DCU Dóchas Éireann 0-11

NUIG 0-18 MTU Kerry 0-15 AET

NUIG and UL will contest the Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup decider next Wednesday evening.

A tense thriller unfolded in Rathkeale as NUIG eventually defeated MTU Kerry 0-18 to 0-15 after extra-time.

At the end of normal time the teams were deadlocked at 0-11 each following a brilliant MTU Kerry burst, inspired by Jack Savage.

Matthew Tierney, who finished with an eight point haul, was instrumental for NUIG throughout.

Maurice Sheridan's outfit led by 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time with Tierney, Tomo Culhane, Cathal Sweeney, Paul Kelly, and Gavin Burke contributing points.

After the restart Tierney continued to impress as NUIG edged five points clear in the closing stages.

Admirably MTU Kerry battled back in determined fashion with Tony Brosnan and Savage carrying a potent threat.

A late Savage point ensured extra-time was required, but NUIG responded in excellent fashion.

Despite the injury enforced absences of Seán Ó Maolchiaráin and Tommy Conroy, NUIG found a way to overcome MTU Kerry.

Dara Moynihan, Savage, and Brosnan were all sent off in the dying embers of the game as NUIG, who last won the competition in 2003, advanced.

UL overcame DCU at Netwatch Cullen Park by 0-14 to 0-11 following a late flurry of scores.

Level at 0-11 each with 10 minutes remaining UL stayed cool as David Clifford and Emmett McMahon laned vital scores for Declan Brouder's charges.

At the interval UL led by 0-7 to 0-6 as both teams kicked some sweet scores.

UL edged three points ahead early in the second half, but DCU, with Jordan Morrissey prominent, drew level. Then UL, prompted by Clifford's class, finished strongly.

Ultimately UL just had a bit more punch in attack as Clifford (0-4), Paul Towney (0-3), and McMahon (0-2) provided plenty of inspiration with Connell Dempsey and Dan Gray also clipping points.

It will be a first final appearance for UL since 1997 when they lost 1-13 to 1-6 against IT Tralee.
