Eamonn Fitzmaurice
Kerry manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice was pleased with the effort his players showed in their convincing 3-15 to 0-14 Allianz Football League Division 1 semi-final win over Roscommon.
Their ability to turn the ball over in the middle third and then quickly cut through an exposed Roscommon defence for three goals in the first half laid the platform for their victory.
“It's great to be back in a National League Final, we haven't been there in seven years,” said Fitzmaurice.
“We'll have another game against Division 1 opposition which will be good for us as well. So, yeah, it's good for us to be back in the Final.
“In fairness to the lads, they worked very hard again when we didn't have the ball and we got scores on the break a couple of times where we punished Roscommon.
“I think we mixed the good and the bad today. There were parts of the game where we were very good and there were parts of the game particularly in the second-half when we were sloppy and switched off a bit.
“From that point of view there's plenty to work on for the League Final which is good for us for the next couple of weeks to have something to get our teeth stuck into again.
“You know, like I said, we have to be satisfied. But at the same time there are definitely things we can improve on.”
It was a convincing team performance by Kerry, but Darran O’Sullivan was comfortably the game’s most outstanding individual.
He scored 1-4 from play and tortured the Roscommon defence with his pace and intelligent movement.
“He's injury free, I think that's the big thing with Darran this year,” said Fitzmaurice. “In the last couple of years he's been carrying injuries and from about this time last year on he's been injury-free and it's allowed him to get a good bit of training under his belt, get really fit, and also then to come into a line of form that he's maintained throughout the League.
“It's great for us that he's playing so well and long may it continue into the Championship as well.”
