Darragh O'Hanlon voted GAA.ie Footballer of the Week
Darragh O Hanlon
Down's Darragh O'Hanlon has been voted GAA.ie Footballer of the Week.
His inspirational performance played a huge part in Down's Ulster SFC Quarter-Final victory over Armagh last Sunday.
That display earned him 44 per cent of the public vote on the GAA's Official Twitter (@officialgaa), Facebook, and Instagram pages ahead of Kildare's Daniel Flynn and Meath's Graham Reilly.
GAA.ie Footballer of the Week
1: Darragh O'Hanlon (Down) - 2001 (44 per cent)
**2: **Daniel Flynn (Kildare) - 1378 (30 per cent)
3: Graham Reilly (Meath) - 1184 (26 per cent)
Seldom would you see a half-back over the free-taking responsibilities but it was no issue for Down’s Darragh O’Hanlon who was relentless in his work ethic up and down the pitch during the win over Armagh.
Operating at left half-back, he was the game’s top-scorer with four points, including two placed balls.
His running from deep posed huge problems for the Armagh rear-guard, he used possession wisely, and took his scores clinically.
Kildare’s clash with Laois ended up being a one-sided affair and it was Daniel Flynn at the spearhead of the Lilywhites attack who impressed the most.
Playing at full-forward, Flynn acted as the first line of defence and it was through his selfless hard-work that he created his first score after dispossessing Laois’ Denis Booth before firing over with the outside of his both.
He picked off two further points from play and then in the second-half he scored a fine goal that killed off the Laois challenge.
In what was an intriguing encounter between Meath and Louth in Parnell Park, it was Royal’s sharpshooter Graham Reilly who produced an exemplary performance at the business end of the pitch.
Meath’s defence produced some moments of inconsistency that allowed Louth to stay in the game for large periods, but Reilly was dependable right the way through the game grabbing all his seven scores from play.
It was a complete forward’s performance as Reilly created openings for himself by winning hard-ball and surging past Louth tacklers before finishing clinically.
