Gaelic football continues to find new homes around the world, and in late 2025 it took another important step forward with the formation of Trident Gaels GAA Club in Barbados.

The Trident Gaels was established by five Irish expats living in Barbados: Niall McGroarty from Donegal, Kim Farren & Ameen Muibideen from Dublin, Isabel Auld from Wexford and Jade Morrissey from Waterford.

Founded with the aim of introducing Gaelic football initially to a new sporting community, Trident Gaels was established to create an inclusive, community-driven club that welcomes players of all backgrounds, whether Irish-born, part of the diaspora, or completely new to the games.

Gaelic Football training sessions began in October 2025, with weekly Friday evening sessions held at the local Barbados Rugby Union Pitch.

From the outset, interest was strong. What started as a small group quickly grew into a diverse mix of Irish expats, locals, and first-time players, all eager to learn the skills and traditions of Gaelic football. The early focus has been on fundamentals: passing, soloing, movement, and small-sided games, while also building a strong social and team culture off the pitch.

For many participants, Trident Gaels has offered their first opportunity to experience Gaelic games, while for others it has provided a welcome connection to Irish sport and culture abroad. A major milestone was reached just before Christmas, when the club held its first internal match and the players took to the field to put their training into practice.

The match marked an important step in the club’s development, showcasing not only improving skills, but also the strong camaraderie and enthusiasm that has become a hallmark of Trident Gaels.

Seeing players who had been training since October or who even joined more recently confidently taking part in a match was a huge moment for the club. It showed how far we’ve come in a short space of time and what’s possible going forward.

Looking ahead, Trident Gaels is focused on growing its membership base, securing further sponsorship and achieving official club incorporation through USGAA. The club also aims to continue promoting Irish culture and community engagement alongside sporting development, with the long-term ambition of representing Barbados on the wider Caribbean and North American Gaelic games stage.
