The Doheny GAA Club is proud to announce a major weekend of commemorative events to mark the centenary of the death of Sam Maguire, one of the most influential figures in the history of the Gaelic Athletic Association and the man whose name is forever associated with Gaelic football's most iconic trophy.
Taking place from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th February 2027, the commemorative weekend will celebrate the life, achievements and enduring legacy of the Dunmanway native whose contribution to the GAA continues to be recognised throughout Ireland and across the global Gaelic games community.
Organised by the Sam Maguire Commemorations Sub-Committee of the Doheny GAA Club, the programme will bring together members of the GAA family, historians, community organisations, schools, public representatives and visitors from across Ireland and overseas. The weekend has the support of the GAA’s National History & Commemorations Committee and will be attended by Uachtarán CLG, Jarlath Burns.

The programme is being coordinated by the Sam Maguire Commemorations Sub-Committee, established by the Doheny GAA Club to ensure that the centenary is marked in a fitting and lasting manner.
Speaking on the launch of the programme, Mark Farr, Chairman of the Doheny GAA Club, said:
"As we mark the centenary of Sam Maguire's passing, the Doheny GAA Club is proud to honour the legacy of a native son of Dunmanway whose name has become synonymous with Gaelic football and Irish sporting heritage. His enduring connection to our community remains a source of immense pride and inspiration for generations past, present and future."
Welcoming the initiative, Uachtarán CLG Jarlath Burns said:
"Sam Maguire is one of the most significant figures in Irish history and immortalised by the trophy that is arguably the greatest prize in Irish sport. It was a cup that I chased for 13 years as an Armagh footballer and while it eluded me, I had the pleasure of presenting it to my own son's team in 2024. Next February, Sam Maguire's home club The Dohenys in his hometown of Dunmanway will honour his legacy and also pay tribute to the man behind the cup and commemorate what was truly, a life less ordinary."
The commemorations are expected to attract visitors from across Ireland and overseas, providing an opportunity to celebrate not only the life of Sam Maguire but also the rich heritage, culture and community spirit of Dunmanway and West Cork.
Daniel O'Donovan, PRO of the Doheny GAA Club and Chairman of the Sam Maguire Commemorations Sub-Committee, added:
"Sam Maguire's name is known wherever Gaelic football is played, yet his story begins here in Dunmanway. As we approach the centenary of his passing, this is an opportunity for our community to reflect on the life of a remarkable West Cork man whose contribution to the GAA continues to be remembered every time the Sam Maguire Cup is lifted. Through these commemorations, we hope to honour his legacy, celebrate our local heritage and ensure that future generations understand the man, the values and the vision behind one of the most iconic symbols in Irish sport."
The club is encouraging local businesses, community groups, schools, volunteers and supporters to become involved in the celebrations and help create a lasting legacy in honour of Sam Maguire.
Further details on the centenary programme, guest speakers and associated events will be announced in the coming months.
