Tailteann Cup Round 1
WATERFORD 0-10 LONDON 5-12
By Jordan Norris at Cappoquin Logistics Fraher Field
London overwhelmed Waterford with a ruthless five-goal display at Fraher Field, racing into an early lead and never looking back in a commanding 17-point victory. The Exiles produced an impressive attacking performance, with five different goalscorers and ten players contributing to the scoreboard, while Waterford’s struggles continued as they extended their winless run to 14 months and 14 competitive games.
Waterford suffered a major setback before throw-in with the loss of captain and talisman Conor Murray, and matters worsened almost immediately when London struck for a goal inside the opening minute. Joe McGill’s effort slipped through the hands of goalkeeper Paudie Hunt and was judged to have crossed the line. Michael O’Brien opened Waterford’s account with a free, but London quickly asserted control through scores from Kristian Healy and another devastating goal on eight minutes. After a swift counterattack, Shay Rafter burst through and fired past Hunt to give the visitors a six-point advantage.
Alan Dunwoody responded with a fine point to keep Waterford in touch, but the hosts missed a crucial chance when O’Brien’s goal attempt was saved by Andrew Walsh. London punished the missed opportunity almost immediately. A misplaced kickout allowed McGill to set up Daniel Clarke, who teed up James Davis for a clinical third goal.
Waterford’s problems deepened when Dunwoody received a black card following an off-the-ball incident. Although O’Brien converted another free, London remained relentless. Sean O’Donoghue surged down the right flank on 32 minutes and squared for David Gouldson to finish expertly for London’s fourth goal. Waterford then squandered another golden opportunity before halftime when Caoimhin Walsh rounded the goalkeeper but dragged his shot wide. At the break, London held a commanding 4-1 to 0-4 lead.
The visitors continued to dominate after the restart. Gouldson added a point before Davis curled over a superb score to underline London’s superiority. Stephen Curry and Aaron Ryan responded for Waterford, while Dunwoody converted a free after Daire Rooney was black-carded, but London remained comfortably ahead thanks to scores from Ciaran Diver, Rafter, and Liam Gallagher.
Rafter’s second goal stretched the gap further, leaving Waterford with little hope of a comeback. London maintained their intensity in the closing stages, with Henry Walsh contributing three points in an impressive cameo and McGill also adding to the tally. Their fifth goal finally arrived in stoppage time when Finbarr Crowley reacted quickest after a shot rebounded off the post and finished to the net.
Late scores from Dunwoody and Ryan (2) offered little consolation for Waterford, who were thoroughly outplayed from start to finish.
For London, it was a landmark and emphatic victory built on clinical finishing, relentless pressure, and dominance across the field. A memorable trip across the water for the Exiles, producing one of their finest hours in recent memory.
