In a demanding year packed with defeats, this was a day when Offaly were defiant.
Considering the amount of scoring chances Clare created, the home team will nurse plenty of regrets, but Offaly were hearty throughout. That grit and determination was rewarded.
It has been a seriously tough campaign for the Faithful, relegation from Division Two in the Allianz Football League was followed by a disappointing Leinster loss to Laois. In Ennis, though, encouraging evidence was available.
Prompted by Dylan Hyland's sweet kicking, Offaly prevailed to earn a place in the Round 2A draw, and guaranteeing two further matches.
The opening period was simply about Offaly's efficiency as the visitors, who were backed by a significant breeze, led 0-9 to 0-4 at the interval.
Offaly, aided by a couple of Dylan Hyland two pointers, struck 0-9 from 11 scoring attempts. Clare, who had plenty of possession, weren't anywhere near as clinical, registering 0-4 from 15.
Without a victory in 2026, Offaly did enjoy some encouraging moments with Hyland and Keith O'Neill prominent in attack.
At the opposite end of the field Aaron Griffin did carry a threat, rifling over two points before the break.
After the restart Clare began to get some joy in the scoring stakes. Cillian Brennan reduced the deficit before Cormac Murray planted a goal that was fashioned by Ikem Ugwueru.
Griffin and Murray added points to edge Clare 1-8 to 0-9, but Offaly were unperturbed. In the 47th minute Nathan Poland's cute pass located Jordan Hayes, who fed Shane Tierney to net a goal with his last act.
Clare went in front again courtesy of two Brian McNamara points, but Offaly stayed the distance.
Level at 1-12 each with 11 minutes remaining, Offaly embarked on a scoring burst of four points without reply. It was a critical spell, and Clare just couldn't recover.
