Allianz Football League Division Three
Westmeath 1-26 Fermanagh 2-11
Clare 0-24 Laois 2-15
Down 1-29 Wexford 1-19
Sligo 1-18 Limerick 1-15
There was a full programme of games on Sunday in Division Three of the Allianz National Football League with Down continuing to set the pace with an impressive 10 point victory in Wexford.
Conor Laverty’s side look well placed to make an immediate return to Division Two and with four wins out of four they sit two points clear at the top of the division.
Pat Havern hit a whopping 14 points for Down, seven from play and seven from placed balls, while Daniel Guinness with four points from play and Odhran Murdock with six points - all from play - were other key men.
Wexford goalkeeper Darragh Brooks knocked over four two point frees to complete a tally of eight points, but Down’s scoring power, with John McGeough getting their goal, was too much for John Hegarty’s men, who have now suffered back to back defeats.
Down are two points clear of second placed Westmeath, who came from seven points behind at half-time against Fermanagh to dominate the second half and run out 12 point winners in an amazing 19 point swing.
Ronan Wallace struck a couple of two pointers, while Luke Loughlin hit a vital 55th minute goal as Mark McHugh’s men eye up promotion.
Fermanagh are rooted to the bottom of the table with no points from their four games and are in major relegation trouble with a scoring difference of -29, 19 less than anyone else in the division.
Elsewhere, Clare made it back to back wins after losing their opening two games when they came from behind to defeat Laois by three points.
Laois looked like they might pull off an unlikely victory when Patrick O’Sullivan goaled with 10 minutes to go, with the O’Moore men having been down to 14 men since the 22 minute after the dismissal of Brian Byrne for an off the ball incident.
But Clare gathered themselves and two pointers from Cormac Murray and Aaron Griffin helped them get back into the game. Evan O’Carroll had a free to tie it up late on, but Clare countered with points from Eoin Cleary, who finished with 0-10, and Jamie Stack to prevail.
The final match in Division Three saw Sligo defeat Limerick in a game where the Treaty men never managed to get their noses in front.
Cian Lally’s early goal for Sligo proved key in the end and the dismissal of Sean Clancy on 55 minutes for a yellow and black card proved a major blow for the visitors.
Sligo are now on four points with Limerick joint second bottom on three.
