EirGrid Ulster U20 Football Championship Round 2

TYRONE 0-11 DOWN 1-8

MONAGHAN 2-8 ANTRIM 1-6

Two injury-time points saw Tyrone snatch a draw with Down in a hard-fought EirGrid Ulster U20 Football Championship Round 2 clash this evening.

The Mourne County seemed the most likely winners for most of the contest, but Tyrone refused to wave the white flag and in the end were rewarded for their tenacity.

Down settled into the contest more quickly and points from Jamie Doran (2), Dara Mussen, and Senan Carr had them 0-4 to 0-1 ahead by the 20th minute.

They looked in really good shape when they then scored the only goal of the match on 26 minutes. Donal Scullion did superbly to shimmy into space and finish clinically.

Tyrone hit back with a Gavin Potter point, but Down were in a strong position at the break, leading by 1-4 to 0-2.

As the second half progressed Tyrone came more into the contest, and when Cormac Devlin pointed after 46 minutes there was just two between the teams, the scoreline now reading 1-6 to 0-7.

Down looked like they were going to edge the win when another Doran free restored their two point lead on 60 minutes.

But Tyrone came with an impressive surge in injury-time as points from Conor Owens and Callum Daly saw them take a share of the spoils.

In tonight’s other match in the EirGrid Ulster U20 Championship, Monaghan defeated Antrim by 2-8 to 1-6.

A Bobby McCaul goal put the Farney County 1-2 to 0-1 ahead after 17 minutes, but Antrim fought back and closed the deficit to two points by half-time.

They got it down to the minimum early in the second-half, but the steady free-taking of Stephen Mooney helped Monaghan open the gap again.

Points from by Darragh Mee and Mooney seemed to have Monaghan in control as the game ticked towards its conclusion, but a Jonny Hannon goal briefly gave Antrim hope.

Not for long. Monghan struck back in kind with a goal of their own through Kian Duffy to seal the five-point win.
