Allianz Football League Division Four
Longford 2-18 Waterford 3-14
There was high drama at Cappoquin Logistics Fraher Field this afternoon as Longford snatched victory from the jaws of defeat to leave Waterford heartbroken.
It had looked like Waterford might stage a smash and grab of their own when they hit a goal in stoppage time from Liam Mulligan, but Daniel Reynolds struck a Longford goal deep into added time to help Mike Solan’s side to victory.
Longford had lost their opening Division Four tie to London by five points at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park and this was a much needed boost as they look towards a Round Three encounter with Antrim at Toomebridge next weekend.
Their 2-18 tally will have pleased them after managing just 2-9 against a London side that already had a game under their belt.
For Waterford, who host Wicklow next weekend, it was a second successive defeat after a five point loss to Leitrim at Carrick-on-Shannon.
Last gasp hero Daniel Reynolds finished with 1-2 from play while other key moments for Longford included a second half two pointer from Dessie Reynolds, a vital 24th minute save from their goalkeeper Eoin McGuinness and a Dylan Farrell goal on 22 minutes.
“To be fair to Dan when he turns the afterburners on not too many with him and he created that goal pretty much out of nothing and you have to say ‘well done’ to him but it was a real team effort, “said Solan afterwards, speaking to Longford GAA.
An Aaron Ryan goal edged Waterford 1-2 to 0-4 ahead in the 19th minute, but Longford responded.
Dylan Farrell netted for the midlanders', who departed at the break armed with a 1-8 to 1-7 advantage.
Waterford struck goals courtesy of Darragh Walsh and Liam Mulligan to lead 3-14 to 1-18, but Reynolds supplied the decisive blow.
