Allianz Football League Division 1

MAYO 1-18 DUBLIN 2-9

Mayo made it two wins from two in Division 1 of the Allianz Football League with a very convincing victory over Dublin that would have been even more decisive had they been more clinical in front of the posts.

Andy Moran’s team were the better side for most of the contest as they set an early pace and then struck a decisive blow on 46 minutes when Darragh Beirne struck for a goal.

Dublin’s hopes weren’t helped by the dismissal of Seán McMahon shortly after the restart for an off-the-ball incident and a first-half injury to the influential Brian Howard.

Mayo found their rhythm early on as Sam Callinan and Fergal Boland landed points in the first two minutes of the match.

Dublin briefly found a surge of momentum when Luke Breathnach goaled but Mayo stuck to their task and two-pointers from Ryan O’Donoghue and David McBrien pushed them 0-7 to 1-2 ahead by the 15 minute mark.

The intensity of the contest dipped in the second quarter but Mayo maintained that two-point advantage by the half-time whistle, 0-10 to 1-5.

Mayo never really looked like losing after Beirne struck for his goal after a darting run through the Dublin defence was followed by a clinical finish past Evan Comerford.

The 19-year-old Beirne looks like a serious prospect and finished the match with 1-1 to his name and could have scored another couple of goals.

Dublin briefly threatened a revival when Paddy Small scored a 53rd minute goal and Cormac Costello nailed a two-pointer, but it was Mayo who finished the stronger team as they outscored the visitors by four points in the second half.
