112 teams to compete in 2026 USGAA Finals

The paint is drying on the five purpose-built GAA pitches at the Irish Cultural Center in Canton, Massachusetts, just a short drive from Boston. Later this week, over 4,000 players, volunteers, and supporters from across North America will be converging on the venue for the 2026 USGAA Finals.

While this event has become a massive annual fixture in the United States, it was not always so widely attended. The 1996 edition, just three short decades ago, saw barely two dozen teams competing across all codes. This year, Boston is prepared to welcome 112 teams, who will play camogie, hurling, and ladies’ and men’s Gaelic football all the way from Junior D to Senior.

In addition to the usual staples, this year will also feature exhibition handball matches. This is in honor of the landmark memorandum-of-understanding signed between the USGAA and the U.S. Handball Association at last year’s annual convention in Nashville.

The American Gaelic games community is particularly energized this year, as the USGAA is fresh off its most successful intercounty campaign in history.

The USGAA Men’s Junior All-Ireland Football team, originally formed in 2024, took Ireland by storm this year. A panel comprised entirely of homegrown American talent defeated Warwickshire in a thrilling semi-final last month to book a spot in the final at Croke Park. Although the USGAA ultimately fell to London in that match, the players drawn from clubs in Boston, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Chicago, made history by making it that far, and will be hungry to win with their home clubs.

The USGAA also sent nearly 30 men’s and women’s teams to compete in the 2026 GAA World Games in Waterford this year, with several teams claiming titles in their divisions.

These homegrown stars will be lining out alongside a great deal of Irish-born players across all codes, as the 170 clubs that make up the USGAA continue to serve as crucial community hubs for new arrivals from Ireland. Some Irish players are in the U.S. for a short time, some have made it their permanent home, and all are very welcome on USGAA pitches.

The USGAA also boasts membership from clubs in Mexico and the Caribbean. This year’s finals will see the Mexico City Los San Patricios GAA and the Cayman Islands GAA competing in football. Also of note this year is the formation of new clubs in Barbados and Bermuda.

With such massive anticipation, the 2026 USGAA Finals in Boston might prove to be the biggest edition of the event in county history. What, then, accounts for the explosive growth of the USGAA in recent years?

The world is becoming increasingly global, and Gaelic games in the U.S. have certainly benefited from this. Whether it’s the internet introducing viewers to the games for the first time, or global commerce making the equipment more accessible than ever, GAA abroad would not have reached the scale it has without these advances.

However, perhaps even more important, is what the GAA represents to its players and supporters. Just as in Ireland, the clubs that make up the USGAA are much more than sports teams. They are threads that tie together the lives of their members, who arrived as individuals with a love of Ireland’s beautiful games, and remain as enmeshed members of a global community.

The fields at the Irish Cultural Center in Canton are ready. Now, the runways at Boston Logan will welcome thousands who can’t wait to see what the weekend has in store.
