MEATH 4-24 WICKLOW 2-15

By William Dunne at Parnell Park

A Mark O’Sullivan hat-trick helped Meath claim the Division 2B crown over Wicklow in a one-sided encounter in Parnell Park.

A win for Meath was crucial for the county’s hurling progression after winning the Christy Ring Cup last summer which will mean they’ll be contesting in this year’s Leinster Hurling Championship.

With the sides at two points each it was a lovely over the shoulder score by Meath’s Mark O’Sullivan that began a bit of a purple patch for the Royals.

A splendid run by Meath midfielder Anthony Forde penetrated the Wicklow defence to set up another for O’Sullivan before Steven Lynch converted his second and third place balls to have the score at 0-6 to 0-2 after 14 minutes.

Wicklow stuck in the game and on 21 minutes when a high ball eluded the Meath full-back line, the ball found its way into the hands of George O’Brien who made no mistake in raising the green flag putting Wicklow in front for the first time.

Just as it seemed Meath were losing their way slightly, man-of-the-match O’Sullivan caught a ball sent in by Keith Keoghan and finished neatly to put his side back in front by two.

Shortly after O’Sullivan capitalised on a handling error by Wicklow’s John Henderson to score his second before right on half-time, a high floating ball was excellently caught by George O’Brien who superbly finished with one hand to keep Wicklow in the game as the sides went in 2-09 to 2-06 at the interval.

Straight after the break O’Sullivan completed his hat-trick to put one hand on the trophy, although keeper Eoghan O’Mahony might feel he could have done more to prevent the Kiltale man’s third.

Meath did not relent and through some well worked scores from James Kelly, Anthony Forde and Joe Keena they racked up 1-06 without reply in the second half.

Eoin McCormack impressed off the bench for Wicklow, while Meath free taker Steven Clynch kept racking up his own personally tally.

Goal machine turned provider on 66 minutes when O’Sullivan set up substitute Neil Heffernan to score Meath’s fourth and final goal of the evening, capping off a flawless league campaign for Martin Ennis’ men.
