Kildare star Kevin Feely says that the county have no specific targets for this year and all they are focussed on at the moment is their Leinster Quarter-Final on June 3rd.

The Lilywhites enjoyed an encouraging Allianz Football League campaign which saw them secure promotion to the top flight, and although they lost out in the Division 2 decider to Galway, Feely reckons that nothing will change in their preparation for the Championship.

“The way we worked things in the League is that we tried our best not to look ahead of ourselves and that really worked well for us, was just taking each game as it came.

“At the moment I suppose our only aim and our only goal is just to win our Quarter-Final be it against Laois or Longford,” Feely said.

Feely, who played professional football in England between 2012 and 2015, has since returned to the GAA and was one of the stand out performers for Kildare this spring.

Kildare haven’t won a Leinster Senior Football Championship since 2000, but the Lilywhites are simply focused on their provincial opener. “There’s literally been no talk at all among the group or the management to us about potential finishes in the Leinster Championship.

“Literally the only thing we had any talks about at all was that Leinster Quarter Final against Laois or Longford so that’s all we are focusing on at the moment.

“They’re (Laois and Longford) playing in a few weeks so once we know the winner of that game I suppose that’s when we’ll really focus in on our opposition, but I’d say for the time being, we are just trying to focus on getting our own game right and own game plan right in our own heads so that’s the main focus at the moment.”

At the time, Kildare manager Cian O’Neill visibly disappointed following the defeat to Galway. “We knew we kind of let ourselves down performance wise in that game, but at the same time we were reflecting on the League as a whole it was fairly positive, at least we got promotion to Division 1,” Feely stated.

“I suppose looking back now to be fair we would be relatively happy with how things went in the League, but we know at the same time that there’s huge room for improvement and that’s what we’re hoping to do now come Championship.”
