This Sunday, September 9, Monagea GAA Club will commemorate the achievements of one of the GAA’s great servants, Willie Hough. One hundred years ago, Hough captained Limerick to the Munster and All-Ireland hurling titles of 1918.

During that campaign Limerick was represented by Monagea’s neighbours Newcastle West, and under Hough’s leadership they achieved Limerick’s second national triumph. Hough would be on the Limerick team that won the All-Ireland championship once more in 1921. He won a third Muster title in 1923, before retiring from the game and going on to become a distinguished administrator. He was Treasurer of the Munster Council from 1936 to 1968.

On Sunday, 9 September, there will be a commemorative Mass in Monagea Parish Church at 10am, followed by the unveiling of a plaque at Monagea GAA grounds, and the laying of a wreath at Willie Hough’s grave at Monagea Cemetery. Light refreshments will be served afterward at Monagea Centre. Fittingly, the Liam McCarthy Cup will not only be in Limerick but will be in Monagea for the occasion.
