Ultimately Sligo had too much power for the home team at Gaelic Park, but Eugene McVerry, the accurate New York forward, has been voted GAA.ie Footballer of the Week.

For the second year in a row New York came close to causing a Connacht Senior Football Championship shock.

McVerry earned 815 votes  on the GAA's Official Twitter (officialgaa), Facebook, and Instagram pages , while Sligo's John Kelly finished second with colleague Adrian Marren third.

** **

1: Eugene McVerry (New York) - 815 votes (39%)

2: John Kelly (Sligo) - 704 votes (33%)

3: Adrian Marren (Sligo) - 602 votes (28%)

A potent threat throughout for New York, former Armagh player Eugene McVerry struck 1-5.

McVerry was precise from frees and also was cool enough to rattle the Sligo net with an assured finish for a tonic New York goal.

Justin O’Halloran’s charges, though, were unable to build sufficiently on that major as Sligo pulled clear in the closing stages.

The hard working John Kelly was another key figure in Sligo’s success contributing two fine points for the visitors.

Kelly was prominent repeatedly driving forward at every opportunity for Sligo, while his scores were well taken.

Tourlestrane clubman Kelly is making an impact in Sligo colours.

When Sligo were under pressure requiring scores Adrian Marren supplied important points.

One of the most accurate attackers in the west, Marren remains an influential figure for Niall Carew’s team.

The Curry clubman registered 0-5 for Sligo, with three excellent efforts from play and Marren will be hoping to be similarly effective against Mayo in Castlebar on May 21.
