A keenly contested affair in Ballina culminated in a Mayo win.

Jason Doherty's second half goal was the key score as Mayo fended off a determined Sligo fightback.

Mayo, who named an experienced team for the game, dominated much of the first half accumulating a 0-7 to 0-2 interval lead.

Doherty drilled over three frees, while Diarmuid O'Connor, Evan Regan, and Paddy Durcan also found the range.

After the restart, though, Sligo improved considerably with scores from Niall Murphy, Neil Ewing, and Stephen Coen bringing them back into contention.

Mayo replied with an opportunistic Jason Doherty goal which edged the Green and Red 1-7 to 0-7 clear.

Aidan O'Shea and Doherty landed points either side of a Stephen Coen effort for Sligo as Mayo led by four with 15 minutes remaining.

Coen and Marren narrowed the gap to two, but Stephen Rochford's charges held out.
