Oral History

Gerard McCrink, Bill Quinn, Seán O'Rourke and Tom Cunningham

Gerard McCrink, Bill Quinn, Seán O'Rourke and Tom Cunningham reflect on the continuing evolution of the GAA in County Down. They recall their own memories of playing Gaelic games growing up, contrasting the level of organisation that went into activities with that in 2011. The county's successes at All-Ireland level are remembered with great pride, especially those during the 1960s. Some of them spent time working in England and they share their experiences from this period. All four are members of An Ríocht and the history of the club is explored in detail. Living in North of Ireland they also discuss the impact of the Troubles on GAA life. Although the Association has changed beyond all recognition over the decades, all agree that it remains the lifeblood of their community.
