All Ireland SFC Qualifier: Monaghan cruise to victory

By Tomás McCarthy at Fraher Field, Dungarvan

Monaghan marched on to Round 3 of the All Ireland qualifiers with minimum fuss as they emerged 27 point winners against Waterford.

Fifteen players were on target for the boys in blue. Conor McManus, Karl O'Connell, Fintan Kelly, Dessie Mone and Shane Carey all raised green flags.

In front of 3,024 spectators, the strongly supported visitors reached the dressing rooms 3-11 to 0-4 ahead. Monaghan scored 2-2 in the last four minutes.

They had six points on the board before Kieran Power opened Waterford's account on the quarter hour. Gavin Crotty sent over a second.

On 20 minutes, Derek O'Mahoney awarded a Monaghan penalty for a foul on Ryan McAnaspie. Conor McManus stepped forward and sent Stephen Enright the wrong way. Goalkeeper Rory Beggan then split the posts from a free.

Conor Murray and Jason Curry got singles for Waterford to leave it 1-9 to 0-4 heading into the closing stages of the half. The home side tired however and Karl O'Connell and Fintan Kelly stung Enright's net before the interval.

The teams traded three points apiece on the resumption before substitute Dessie Mone blasted a shot to the roof of the net. Michael Curry produced two magnificent blocks before the number five finished it off.

Experienced Waterford defender Thomas O'Gorman kept Conor McManus scoreless from play and the two-time All Star was withdrawn on 55 minutes.

The impressive Conor McCarthy set up Shane Carey for Monaghan's fifth major six minutes from time. Stephen Prendergast and Jack Mullaney claimed consolation points before a Rory Beggan free completed the rout.
