Fitzgibbon Cup results

UCC 1-18 Maynooth University 0-19

UL 2-23 ATU Galway 2-10

UCC opened up their Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup campaign with a hard-fought two-point win over Maynooth University tonight.

Despite being reduced to 14-men just before half-time at which stage they trailed by six points, the Kildare side proved doughty opponents and dominated the second-half against the odds.

Jack O’Connor scored 1-2 for UCC in that first-half but he didn’t reappear for the second and the UCC attack struggled without him.

Maynooth had drawn level by the hour mark as players like Emmet Landy and Andy Hickey hurled up a storm, but UCC summoned one last charge as points by Shane Barrett and Niall O’Leary saw them clinch victory.

In this evening’s other match, Tipperary’s Gearoid O’Connor scored 11 points for UL as they coasted to a comfortable 13-point win over ATU Galway.
