Galway hurling manager Shane O’Neill expects former captain David Burke to return to training in the next fortnight.

St Thomas’ clubman had taken a brief break to travel, but speaking at the Loughrea Hotel & Spa on Friday morning O’Neill confirmed that Burke is due back shortly.

Daithi Burke should also feature for Galway in the remaining rounds of the Allianz Hurling League following his AIB Club Senior Football exploits with Corofin.

“David should be back in the next 10 days I'd say,” O’Neill stated. “Absolutely it is a great boost, a former captain and a magnificent player.

“He will be back in the next few days. Daithi Burke will be back as well. He isn't on the pitch with us, but he is doing his own work. What he is doing would be slightly different from football to hurling.”

O’Neill, who revealed that John Hanbury isn’t in the current Galway panel, has also been in touch with Jonathan Glynn and Joseph Cooney, who are both currently based overseas.

“I've been (in touch), I've no update on Johnny Glynn yet,” O’Neill remarked. “Joseph I spoke to last week, he just can't give the commitment at the moment.

“He is in Australia obviously at the moment, but I'm not saying he mightn't be back at some stage. He might. At the moment he can't give the commitment and that is fine.”

Following the opening two rounds of the League Galway's panel has been cut according to O'Neill. "We are down to 36 at the moment, but it isn't a defined panel. It isn't a closed shop by any means. The 36 are aware of that, the guys, who have been released are aware of it.

"Some of the younger guys, who may come into it, have been given work to do themselves. We feel they are good enough to play inter-county hurling, but probably not at this stage of their development. So they have been given some work to do. We will see how they get on in the League and over the next few months.

"If they are developing and guys aren't performing inside it will be changed. Both sets - those players, who have been released and those in the squad - are aware of that."
