Leinster Hurling Championship format to change

Wexford defeated Kilkenny in the 2019 Leinster Senior Hurling Championship Final at Croke Park.

Wexford defeated Kilkenny in the 2019 Leinster Senior Hurling Championship Final at Croke Park.

GAA delegates voted to change the format of the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship..

Motion 59 was carried with an overwhelming 95% majority ensuring there will be no relegation from the province this year.

The Joe McDonagh champions from this summer will be promoted to the Leinster Championship for 2021 thereby bringing the number of competing teams in the Leinster Championship to six.

As things stand, the exception is if Kerry win the Joe McDonagh Cup this year. Then the Kingdom play off against the whatever team finished bottom in the 2020 Munster Championship to decide which team would compete in the Munster Championship in 2021 and which team would play in the Joe McDonagh Cup.

If a team other than Kerry wins the Joe McDonagh Cup this year, then the Leinster Championship will go from a five-team to a six-team competition for 2021.

Also it means that there will be no team relegated from the Joe McDonagh Cup, while two teams will be promoted from the Christy Ring Cup ensuring six counties compete at that level in 2021.

One team will be relegated from the Christy Ring into the Nickey Rackard Cup.

The winners of the Nickey Rackard will be promoted to the Christy Ring Cup with two teams relegated to the Lory Meagher Cup.

The third bottom team will play the Lory Meagher Cup winner in a play-off with the winner competing in the Nickey Rackard Cup in 2021.
