2017 All Stars 30 goals 2016 All-Stars 23 goals

There were goals galore in today’s PwC All-Star hurling match in Singapore as the 2017 All-Stars proved too strong for the 2016 selection.

It was a nine-a-side and goals only contest because of the confines of The Singapore Recreation Club - the picturesque venue in the heart of the city that hosted the occasion.

The 2017 team’s two-pronged attack of Waterford’s Pauric Mahony and Conor Cooney proved irresistible, as they hit a combined total of 17 games.

Top scorer for the 2016 team was an unlikely figure – former Offaly hurler Gary Hannify who is now working in Singapore and was one of three ‘locals’ to take part in the game along with fellow Singapore Gaelic Lions club-members Mike Barry and Padraic Dineen.

Dineen also got in on the scoring for the 2017 All-Stars, so the vocal Singapore Gaelic Lions club members in attendance had plenty of reason to cheer.

The match was split into four 10-minute quarters, and it was the 2017 selection that made most of the early running with Cooney and Conor Whelan in particular looking sharp.

Three goals from Whelan and two from Cooney helped the 2017 team into an eight goals to two lead, but the 2016 team rallied toward the end of the quarter with a goal from Hannify raising the biggest cheer of the day so far.

The 2017 All-Stars kept their noses in front in the second-quarter and led at the half-time break by 14 goals to 10, but then the 2016 All-Stars came on strong in the third quarter to reduce the gap to just a single goal.

Pauric Mahony went goal-crazy at the start of the fourth quarter though, scoring five in a row that effectively settled the contest in the 2017 team’s favour.

It was very entertaining stuff, and every Singapore Gaelic Lions club-member can be proud of the way they hosted a memorable event.
