Na Fianna win Féile Peil na nÓg

Monday, July 05, 2010

Na Fianna victory ensures a Dublin club wins Division 1 Féile title for third consecutive year and Claregalway triumph in girls Division 1 final.

Uachtaran Chumann Luthchleas Gael Criostóir Ó Cuana hails 29th Féile football finals as magnificent celebration of Gaelic games.

Na Fianna of Dublin won the Division 1 title at the Coca-Cola GAA Féile Peile na nÓg finals in Celtic Park in Derry today, defeating Douglas of Cork 3-10 to 1-3. It was the third consecutive Féile Division 1 title for Dublin clubs, following on from Ballyboden St Enda’s victory in 2009 and Kilmacud Crokes’ 2008 success.

In the girls Division 1 final, Claregalway of Galway defeated St Laurences of Kildare on a scoreline of 3-2 to 0-4, to become the first Galway club to win the Division 1 title since 2001.

2010 marked the 29th anniversary of the Féile Peile na nÓg competition, which are the All-Ireland Under-14 boys and girls Gaelic football finals. This year the finals took place throughout the county of Derry from June 2nd – 4th, culminating in the finals today in Celtic Park.

Over 4,000 youths, from clubs throughout Ireland and beyond, participated in the finals over the three days of competition.

Speaking in Derry today, Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Criostióir Ó Cuana congratulated everyone associated with the event. He said:

“A sincere thanks to everyone in Derry, both the organisers and participants who contributed to such a marvellous and successful weekend, a fitting tribute to the 29th Féile finals and one that will live long in the memory of everyone who attended and participated”.

Coca-Cola has sponsored Féile Peile na nÓg since 1993, and also sponsors the Féile na nGael hurling, camogie and handball competitions, which earlier this summer celebrated their 40th anniversary celebrations in Clare.

Erica Roseingrave, Public Affairs and Communications Manager of Coca-Cola said:

“Coca-Cola is proud of its association with both the Féile Peile na nÓg and Féile na nGael competitions. That the competitions are stronger than ever is a testament to the clubs, officials, players and everybody who have nurtured these magnificent festivals of sport since they first began. Congratulations to everyone who has taken part and contributed to such a wonderful celebration of Gaelic games in Derry this weekend”.
